About us
About NEREUS
We are an independent consultancy that brings research-grade science to practical decisions about water, coast and climate.
Our name
Why Nereus
In Greek mythology, Nereus was the Old Man of the Sea, a sea god known for his wisdom and his truthfulness. He was said to know the secrets of the sea and never to lie. His name reminds us every day of what our clients need from us: deep knowledge of water and honest, well-founded advice.
Mission and vision
Mission
To give public and private clients rigorous, independent and clear answers to their water, coastal and climate challenges, combining field data, numerical modelling and expert judgement.
Vision
To be a trusted name in science-based consulting on the ocean, water and the atmosphere, recognised for the quality of our work and the clarity of our advice.
What guides us
Our values
Rigour
We follow the evidence, document our assumptions and quantify uncertainty.
Integrity
We give honest advice, even when it is not the answer people hoped for.
Clarity
We explain complex results in language that decision-makers can use.
Sustainability
We help our clients work with natural processes, not against them.
Collaboration
We work closely with clients, engineers and researchers as one team.
Our approach
From the question to a clear answer
- 01
Understand
We define the question, the decisions it must support and the data available.
- 02
Measure
We gather and quality-check field, satellite and reanalysis data.
- 03
Model
We build, calibrate and validate numerical models that are fit for purpose.
- 04
Advise
We turn results into clear conclusions, design values and recommendations.
People
Our team
Our specialists combine research and consulting experience across hydrology, hydraulics, oceanography and meteorology.
Mattia Scovenna, PhD
Co-founder
Environmental engineer specialising in coastal hydrodynamics and ocean modelling, combining numerical analysis with field experience to support the management of ports, lagoons and coastal waters.
Mattia Scovenna, PhD on LinkedInRead full profile of Mattia Scovenna, PhD
Mattia is an environmental engineer and co-founder of NEREUS. He holds a PhD in Engineering for Marine and Coastal Environments from the University of Genoa, with research experience in Italy and Spain.
His expertise lies in coastal hydrodynamics and ocean modelling, with a focus on understanding how water, contaminants and floating material move through ports, lagoons and coastal seas. He combines numerical modelling and data analysis with direct field experience, including measurement campaigns at sea and scientific diving.
Over the course of his career, Mattia has contributed to international projects on marine pollution preparedness, coastal management and the sustainable use of marine resources. At NEREUS, he turns this scientific background into clear, practical support for clients working in and around the marine environment.
Andrés Felipe Julio Barragán
Co-founder
Physical oceanographer specialising in ocean forecasting and coastal modelling, with experience building operational prediction systems and assessing coastal erosion and climate risk.

Andrés is a physical oceanographer and co-founder of NEREUS. He holds master's degrees in Physical Oceanography and in Territorial and Coastal Planning, together with a specialisation in coastal climate change risk assessment and adaptation from the University of Cantabria.
His expertise lies in ocean forecasting and coastal numerical modelling. At IHCantabria in Spain, he designed and deployed an operational forecasting system for a coastal bay, predicting currents, sea level, temperature and salinity. He has also worked on coastal erosion monitoring and mitigation, combining wave and hydrodynamic models with field surveys and spatial analysis.
With research and professional experience across Colombia, Brazil and Spain, Andrés brings an international perspective to coastal and marine challenges. At NEREUS, he turns ocean data and models into reliable, usable information for clients working in and around the marine environment.
